This book and its prequel were the first books my 8 1/2 year old ever devoured, and I think highly of them. Overall, this installment of Varjak's story is less creepy, mystical, and philosophical than the last. It's much more action driven.

For other parents considering this series, "The Outlaw Varjak Paw" has a lot more straightforward violence than the last one. The antagonist, Sally Bones, terrorizes and controls the cats of the city through a particularly sadistic punishment (SPOILER) -- she rips off the ears and tails of those who disobey her "laws." There are many extended and brutal fights between animals throughout the book, accompanied by Dave McKean's brilliant drawings (no one does blood spatter in the snow quite like him...). Clearly this is not for every child. My kid, however, loved it.

My kid loves Varjak Paw.
My daughter is not a "girly girl" in her reading choices but does love animals. She said the book was exciting and caught her attention in the first two chapters. She got it from the library originally and asked me to keep renewing it. She read it four times in a row. She had not read the first book in the series before this one.

Great book!
I love children's books that are interesting enough and creepy enough to totally engage an adult reader. This series is so good. So, so good. And really kind of weird and creepy, but in just the right way. I would have loved it as a kid and I love it as an adult.
Parents are sometimes afraid to address scary things with children. For readers of the first story, Varjak Paw, this one steps very naturally into some big questions without generating unmanageable fears. Part of the power of this series comes from simple language without superlatives. There are just too many superhero stories in movies and games for a child to find a believable alter ego. I think that S. F. Said gives them real confidence to believe that power comes from love and loyalty.
I bought this book because I'm a cat lover, and I think I heard this book reviewed on NPR. Amazing book! I love the little protagonist! I was soon a participant in his cat world, soon venturing out of the house, and... yes... wandering the streets and meeting all kinds of comrades in claws. The unsavory characters were highly unsavory! Adventures abound as Varjak Paw comes into his own!

I loved this book so much I bought the sequel The Outlaw Varjak Paw. More than that... I've bought both books several times for my grandchildren, neighbor children, and cat lovers of all ages.
