2016 is the 50th anniversary of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. This extraordinary period is vibrantly captured in a sequence of short stories, full of tragedy, humour and satire in beautifully crafted vignettes of life at the time, ordinary and otherwise. Following a rough chronological order, the stories are based on true historical facts, though many of the characters and protagonists are fictional.

Like many episodes in history that were painful at the time, and continue to be politically inconvenient well beyond, the truth of what happened is often buried by those that took part, and misrepresented by those that came after. This tendency was no doubt exacerbated by one of the more unusual aspects of this movement that many of those that did take part became both perpetrators and victims.

The People's Republic of China has changed beyond all recognition from this political low point, and it would seem impossible that it could ever slide backwards into the chaos and economic stagnation brought about by the personality cult of Mao. Yet there is a present day resurgence for what Mao represented, and ill-founded nostalgia both in China and in the West for a movement which present day researchers estimate may have cost tens of millions of lives. This book is both timely and important, as though a work of fiction, it brings to life the experiences of those times, explores the roots of how such madness was set free, and lays bare the mendacity of those who would portray this period as some sort of golden age of socialist experimentation.

“Lee skilfully navigates this subject, not just avoiding a worthy history lesson, but maintaining a high quality of writing that entertains, and moves one to tears in equal measure. Lee undoubtedly demonstrates the best qualities of short story writing.”

The Colour of Red Tales from the Cultural Revolution edition by Nima Lee Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

An extraordinary collection of short stories giving insights into how the infamous Cultural Revolution impacted not only a nation but the individuals it comprises, with sensitive, moving, poignant case studies in the form of well-written short stories. One thing it doesn't do is rage against this nightmarish, Orwellian catastrophe, but the understated, detailed portraits and interplays of the characters followed in each story are far more powerful and memorable than any kind of anger. A must-read for anyone interested in Chinese history, past and present, and in how totalitarianism of any kind affects individuals. It's also a powerful testimony to the human spirit's survival instints and inner resourcefulness in the most devastating circumstances. Of course, not all the characters thrive or even survive, but even so it is ultimately a life-affirming book.
