The First Kiss is the newest installment in Grace Burrowes’ delightful Sweetest Kisses series starring the Knightley brothers. In this outing, youngest brother James falls for Vera Waltham, but will issues from their respective pasts prevent them from finding their happily ever after?Vera is a very successful and extremely talented concert pianist and single mom. Currently on a much needed hiatus after her second marriage ended in a tempestuous divorce, she and her eight year old daughter Twyla are now living a somewhat isolated life in the Maryland countryside. When someone begins harassing her, Vera is frightened, angry and quite certain her ex is behind the threats she has been receiving. Despite her fear, she fiercely guards her newly discovered independence and she rebuffs James’ offers of assistance. But James proves to be very stubborn and the two strike up a unlikely friendship that takes an unexpectedly romantic turn.
James is charming, light-hearted and very flirtatious. He is also quite popular with the ladies, but he never gets serious with any of his flings. However his one night stands have lost their luster recently and he has become more focused on his career. James is instantly drawn to Vera but he also respects her need for space. Their meeting coincides with his growing dissatisfaction with his life and his attempt to discover the source of this frustration leads to surprising introspection on his part. An impulsive decision provides an unexpected connection with Vera that allows their friendship to deepen.
Their transition from friends to lovers is leisurely and this gives both James and Vera the opportunity to get to know one another. More importantly, this slow approach also allows them to reflect on their pasts and gives them the time to work through their respective issues. For the first time in her life, Vera is with a man who puts her before her career and James’ perceptive comments helps her figure out what direction she wants to take professionally. The unexpected romance with Vera gives James some much needed insight into his troubled relationship with his mother and the correlation this has to his superficial relationships with women.
The First Kiss is a well-written novel with a very charming well-developed cast of characters. Although the storyline is engaging and interesting, the overall pacing is a little slow until about the halfway point. The suspense aspect is quite intriguing and it is virtually impossible to guess the perpetrator’s identity. Once again Grace Burrowes brings readers another fabulous romance with plenty of depth, realistic issues and tremendous character growth. It is another highly satisfying love story that is sure to please readers and leave them eager for the next installment in the Sweetest Kisses series.

Oh, the pleasure of the witty repartee, the clever language, the well drawn characters crafted by a superior writer! What a joy to have discovered Ms. Burrowes' newest contemporary romance series! It is as if I were transported into an old and excellent Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn movie. How easy it was to fall in love with the Knightly brothers - in this first book specifically Trent Knightly and his Hannah. From the first page I was hooked and thee story never let me down. Having worked for attorneys for 40 years, I wasn't sure at first if I'd enjoy the series, but as engaging as the people populating the book are, I soon was hooked. Don't pass up the chance to enjoy this Sweetest Kisses series!
Well, I have been reading and loving Grace Burrowes historical romances so I thought I'd try her new contemporary romance series, even though I usually don't read contemporary. Glad I did. This was a very good read with Trent, Hannah and her daughter Grace having distinctive personalities and weaknesses. There was a lot of information about fostering children and a scary look at child services that reveals the flaws and loopholes in the system. Of course with 3 lawyer brothers named Knightley, only a white horse is missing. Wait, wasn't the older horse turning white with age? Well, Grace Burrowes has again thought of everything to make this and the rest of the series a complete success. Ultimately a very loving couple, character growth, the taking of chances and a bit of scary disturbing action. Great!
First off let me say that I won a signed copy of this book in a chat on Facebook shortly after I had ordered it. I've read all of the books Grace Burrowes has written and am absolutely thrilled whenever I get a new one to read.
I gave up on trying to drag out my reading of A Single Kiss and finished it just before 1100pm tonight. I don't generally enjoy reading contemporary romance stories but this one kept me engrossed the whole time. Now all I have to do is wait on the next one in the series and believe me I'm very much looking forward to reading it when it comes out as I'm sure it's going to be just as good. I have the next book in this series already ordered and it will show up in my mailbox or on my front porch the day it goes on sale.
I figured out one of the unknown parts of the story well before it was disclosed, near the end of the book, but it didn't lessen my enjoyment of the story one bit. I'm a tiny bit familiar with the way a state handles reports of child abuse/neglect cases but I learned a lot just by reading this story. There was a secondary, to me at least, storyline with some of the minor characters in the book which I found interesting and the way that was resolved was rather unusual to say the least. As in all of her books there were several plot twists that I found to be very interesting and to me they added to the story considerably.
This is only the second contemporary romance that I can honestly say that I enjoyed reading and it was very different from the other story.
This is a departure for the author, who normally writes historical romance, but it had the same lyrical feel, the same attention to detail as her other stories. As a practicing lawyer, she also nails the legal details and courtroom issues. My only (tiny) objection to the plot is the fact that it is an office romance between a boss and subordinate; in the "real world" of employment law that I practice, no lawyer in his or her right mind would ever have an office rule condoning relationships between a partner and associate that reported directly to him or her, but prohibiting married people from working together. If you can suspend belief on that point it is a lovely read cover to cover
